‘In 2022 I faced a turning point that led to the founding of Somer. After months of working on a joinery project for a major public art client, they told us to dispose of £150,000 worth of beautifully made cabinets. It was at that moment I realised there had to be a better way.’
– Will Floyd-Maclean, Founder
Creating furniture that endures – inspired by nature, driven by purpose
A spirit that matches our own
Our name, Somer, comes from Somerset – ‘land of the summer people’. Based in Frome (pronounced froome), a town known for its independent spirit, we continue the tradition of standing against the status quo.
Why we embrace the rhythm of trees
A 100-year-old ash tree is only just reaching maturity. We respect the natural rhythm of the materials we work with while embracing the efficiency needed to create a new model for the furniture industry. Trees grow slowly, we work swiftly, and you can enjoy Somer furniture at your own pace.
Designed for generations
We use Grown in Britain timber stock to design contemporary freestanding furniture that stands the test of time. This means you won’t need to replace your furniture every few years, saving you money and reducing waste. Our modular designs allow you to adapt and expand your space as your needs change. It’s a smart investment – for you and the Earth we share.
The origin story
Somer’s founder, Will Floyd-Maclean, honed his craft over 10 years at the helm of William Floyd Maclean Ltd; an award-winning carpentry and joinery firm. The woodworking skills and precision that were mainstays of WFM inform everything we do at Somer. The difference is that now we’re free to take full responsibility for the life cycle of our products.
Our people
The highly skilled craftspeople from WFM now form the backbone of Somer, united by a mission to create beauty that endures. With years of experience working on technically challenging projects, their energy and expertise drives our journey to create a movement that prioritises durability over disposability.
